About Soup for Life 2013
Because Gorta needs your soupport!
The money raised from Soup for Life will go to a food security project in Keringet, Kenya.
Soup is a simple meal that is enjoyed by millions of people and their families in both the developed and developing world, providing nourishment and sustenance to people in many different environments.
Today, undernourishment affects almost 1 billion people. Such food insecurity is a result of many factors including increased food prices, crop failures, conflict and climate change.
Restaurants, cafés and pubs across Ireland are becoming Gorta soupporters and donating €1 per bowl of soup sold during National Soup Week. Why not make that lunch date matter?
The money raised from Soup for Life will go to a food security project in Keringet, Kenya.
We will also be promoting kitchen gardens, a school feeding programme (milk for children) and nutrition education for the community.
The goal is for everyone in the community to be having three nutritious meals a day by the end of the project (this would include sufficient calories as well as having a diet that incorporates protein and vegetables).
Typically, staple diets of the poorest and most vulnerable consist mainly of carbohydrates.
We will also be promoting kitchen gardens, a school feeding programme (milk for children) and nutrition education for the community.
At present, Gorta is helping the Keringet community to create water, milk and yogurt enterprises.
The main purpose of these enterprises is to provide job opportunities and raise income for families/suppliers so they can spend money on food, education and medical bills.
